SECOND TIP: Don't play with others until you have at least gotten into Hardmode. It's ok if you don't know what this means, you'll get a vague message later on.
Here's some more basic tips for basic players. :)
1. Don't go doing stupid things. I know this sounds rude, but this is important. Don't try to jump off a mountain. You'll die. Don't try to jump over the Lava pit. You'll die. Don't go dropping that Voodoo Doll into that lava from earlier. You'll die.
2. Rope is very useful. Use it often, whether you're mining, or finding treasures in the sky.
3. Save your potions. You will need some of them for Boss Fights.
4. Be cautious. If you see a poor Lost Girl, it will kill you. If you see a poor Old Man, he will kill you. If you break a Pink Plant, HE. WILL. KILL YOU. Do you notice the theme?
5. Talk to the Guide. Ask for hints. He will help you throughout the game, not only the begining. Not only for crafting, but what to do next, to get the upgraded tiers of armor and weapons.
Hope these tips help, and give you an Idea of what your game will be like without spoiling much.
2.Use the guide to find out what you can make with certain items or just for his hints on what to do in the world.
3.Play the first run through the game all alone, trust me it may seem hard but it's rewarding and wont spoil your surprise of discovering new enemies or places.
4.Save up potions for boss fights and if you want more do a quick search on the wiki for how the plants look when blooming how to grow them and so on.
5.Try out most weapons you find on enemies or bosses and see what fits your playstyle later on the game branches out more into 4 specific classes.
6.Build an awsome fancy base that you can call 'home'.
Ahh, you do have a point
@OP If you don't mind spoilers then I'd suggest you watch some of HappyDays' videos, but if you don't want to spoil the game then I wouldn't watch them :)
