How do I "fill in the gaps" when hammering blocks?

In this example, look at the angled roof-tops:

http://orig01.deviantart.net/47b7/f/2014/293/d/4/slums_by_l0_ke-d83l15p.png

There are 3 layers:

1. Dynasty wood (inner-most)
2. ? (middle)
3. Tin/Copper Plating. (outer layer)

I can't seem to make that "middle layer". If I hammer blocks to create the 'fitting angle' it just leaves a gap.
Not even sure what material is used there.

Example of what I mean by "gap".

When you line 3 blocks horizontally up and hammer all of them to be like this: / / / (an angled shape) there is a gap between them. How do I fill this gap with a different material? Because I can't seem to place blocks in them.

Thanks!

You just basically hammer it many times until it becomes normal, I'm sorry for the answer but it is the answer that works, just hammer it mutiple times but stop at each hammer.

Sorry but this doesn't answer the question.

I understand that you can hammer a block over and over.

BUT when you line 3 blocks up horizontally, and hammer them ALL into the same angle (angle slanted right), it leaves a gap.

Wondering how you can fill the gap?
I ask because in the link I provided in the OP, you can see the slanted roof-tops and they have 3 layers and are slanted, yet, somehow connect without leaving any gaps

The middle layer you're wondering about is actually in the background, it's no a foreground block like the top and bottom layers. It's a visual trick, essentially.

Oh wow. No wonder I am having such a hard time. Any idea what type of background block?

I think the background block is wooden fence.
