Why use wings when there's broom?..
I was ignoring mounts for the longest time thinking it's just a decorative thing, but then I realized that they have various abilities and broom can freaking fly. Indefinitely. And with decent maneuverability. So what's the point in all those high tier wings, if you can get this mount AND free an accessory slot?

broom does have the same speed as any of the late game wings

probably because you can't have other mounts then, which honestly won't matter until post-moon lord. Plus the broom is less 'natural feeling' to use compared to the freedom wings give you.

idk. I feel pretty comfortable on the broom while underground. And outside it's literally the best. Wings don't even come close to this level of comfort and freedom. Plus one free slot to fill with something useful.

its because you can't just use your characters natural movement, like jumping and then gliding afterwards, plus you have to mount / unmount for optimal movement in complex areas. Its very apparent in close quarters caves or player made houses but not as much in open boss battles (unless you fumble the mount key). You can also freely use items like Shield of Cthulhu with the wings which is an important note, I'm pretty sure the broom either locks you out of using it or cancels the mount if you use it.

So basically, wings better for spelunking, closed areas, and if you are using dash items, broom better for bosses in open areas or if you wanna open up trinket slots

Good example is Hardcore Dungeon. Unless you are camping an area you are going to want a pair of wings over the broom.

The broom does work quite well like wings. I use it whenever I manage to get it. However, I prefer wings when underground.

I found that with the broom if you touch down or land on something even by accident (you were passing by a block just a little to close) then you come to an abrupt halt and it takes a moment to get moving again. That sudden halt in movement can be fatal in boss fights or cramped areas underground.

Weather to use it or not will more than likely depend on your maneuverability skills and how well you deal with that abrupt halt from landing.

With broom I will never fall into a spiky pit, or get distracted by those crumbling blocks, or step on a pressure plate. So to me it seems like a much safer way to explore dungeon. And when I got to lizard temple I just flew through, even though it's full of all kinds of nasty traps, spikes and whatnot.

I can also hang in any spot (to mine or defend from mobs) without bothering with hooks or worry not to mine out the block I'm hanging to. It's hard to compare ability to fly indefinitely to anything really. It kinda wins by default.

Wings on their own aren't very good, on the other hand pairing them with boots, frog leg, and a balloon makes them by far the fastest form of movement

dash is too useful

mounts are fine but on stuff like legendary where dodging actually matters you need the extra mobility that wings and dashes come with
