Wood barely protects you at all so you might as well not be wearing armour at all, and it's barely takes any time to chop down a tree anyways.
Cactus isn't always easy to come by if your world gen is unfortunate you might not get any cactus in your desert, or your desert could be very treacherous to reach (e.g, having to go through a infection biome to reach it or it being too high up for you to reach) so while cactus is generally a much better option, it's still not always immediately available.
I usually don't bother since I don't like how wood armour looks but sometimes boreal or infection wood armour can be pretty decent since the wood armours and weapons get stronger based on the wood.
Shadewood (crimson wood) armour is only slightly weaker than copper, and only because copper's set bonus is better, while Shadewood weapons are almost identical to iron weapons and can be gotten much faster, and arguably easier. (Bows have the exact same stats, Shadewood broadsword does 1 less damage, but has more knockback.)
1: Making the armor wastes blocks and/or precious day 1 time which could be used to set up a base or loot more surface chests
2: 9/10 Times the desert is the first thing from the forest on a medium world
3: Any wood armor is a waste regardless of the type because of the same reasons as before (no reason to craft anything but the bow)
Dont play hardcore you wont last a day
if you're taking the whole day 1 to make wood armour I think there's something wrong,
playing on hardcore doesn't really change what I said minus the fact that it's riskier to get the better woods to make gear out of.
I don't play hardcore because I don't find it fun, I've gone through the entirety of pre-hardmode without any deaths before, but I don't like hardcore as a gamemode so I don't play it, I think I would be able to play it but I don't care what people think of my playstyle or skill so I don't play it so I can brag about it on the steam discussions.
The reason why you'd make wood armour is because it's just a bit of extra defense for basically zero cost whatsoever.
I wouldn't go out of my way to make boreal wood armour, but if I'm in a snow biome and I'm already chopping boreal trees down that 4 extra defense is just nice.
It's like saying picking up a shacke and equipping it from a zombie is a huge waste of time just because it's only one defense even though it takes less than 5 seconds to do.
Making wood armour only takes like 30 second to do with the majority of that just being chopping the trees, if you're making wood weapons you might as well make the armour too, it's not like wood is a scarce resource.
1: Wood armors defense is so pitiful it only changes niche matchups to be more in your favor like dying in 4 hits instead of 3 to a small zombie while getting good rng
2: The wood would be much more valuable if it was used for platforms, torches, or even better a solid block inbetween that zombie and you preventing the damage in the first place
3: The wood bows cost 10 blocks while the armor set costs 75 (thats 225 torches or 1875 arrows wasted)
4: Not a single competent teammate of mine makes wood armor either choosing to run naked or the previously mentioned and far superior cactus armor
