Item Duration
How long do items remain on the ground before they despawn, I would like to know because of future "invasions".

There isnt a duration, but an item limit, which is 400. Essentially, so long as the limit isn't reached, the items will last until you close out of the game, and when it is reached, the oldest items will despawn first.

400 is not a lot...

It may not seem like a lot, but in my experience, you usually wont reach that limit so long as you pick the items up. Coins generally account for most of the items anyway, so more rare items will typically be higher up on the list.

I assume 400 is easy to reach with a nice lava bath?

Probably, but at least with the base you have now, the town NPC's make the enemy spawnrate much lower, so it would take much longer in your case.

If you'd like to bring back the decreased spawn rate from villages, you can make a shadow candle from demonite/ crimtane. You also need to be in a graveyard biome.

If you want even MORE enemies, just throw in a water candle after that.

Also keep in mind that items despawn when the world is shut. When you play solo the world goes off when you exit it. But when you play on a dedicated server when the last player online exits - the world not goes down. In-game time just stops instead until some other player joins. So on dedicated servers items do not despawn at all except when the server itself is restarted for some reason. 400 item limit still works as usual though.

It's a mechanic of the official dedicated server app. I am not sure it works that way with unofficial server software.

There are other important game mechanic limits also.

The limit for monsters which may be alive simultaneously is 200.

The limit for projectiles which may exist simultaneously is 1000.

Both those limits may be exploited (or used) in many different ways. For example if you spawn 1000 projectiles somehow and make them last - the EoL can't shoot you at all. And so on.

My base just survived a blood moon pretty well, I didn't have to do much except collect the dropped items. 🙂

You can use the conveyer belts and the treasure magnet to make the items come to you and get picked up.
Couple this with the Void Bag for extra storage and you can get a lot of items from different events and invasions with AFK farms.

Eh, I want at least something to do still. 😂

Building good AFK farms requires you to do a lot. The thing is not to cheese the game to get "free" stuff. The thing is to build interesting things. Some just like to build beautiful things. That's a valid way to play this game too.
