Stuck on "Connecting To" screen
I've been trying to connect via steam to a friend's world, and am stuck on the connecting screen.
It comes up going "joining *username*" and then goes to "Connecting To". Previously it would say "Connecting To *username*".
I've tried restarting steam, restarting my laptop, reinstalling Terraria, you name it.
We have never had any problems before, both of us are both up to date with game updates and with steam client updates.
Help?

Yes that is also true.

It depends on everything to be honest, the download, Weather can mess up the connection.

The location of the WiFi (like if in the middle city you need a better wifi or you will find it bumping around.)

We've played the same way, both in the same places, no issues with our wifi, for weeks without problems. We have others join us - exactly the same. We all have set up desks for our laptops and computers, nothing has changed between now and the last time i joined (about 8 hours ago)
The only thing I can think that is different, is now a large storm has rolled in across the country - but none of the others are having issues
I have found a fix for me!
If you looked on ipchicken for your ip it lied xD

Necromancer
let's beat the "the post that's been necromanced the most" record
But there is still no solution so its fine to necromance it
Probably changes in router config. If anyone still has this problem: You'll need to forward the terraria server ports in your router.

edit: by the way, this was asked too often. There is a sticky thread "How to set up a server" you should read.

Port forwarding shouldn't be required, this isn't 1990 and we're not playing duke nukem at the university library over IPX. Also who is supposed to do the forwarding? The host or the joiner? Because some people can connect to me and some can't. At the very least we need more useful error messages. Also error messages.

Speaking of that era: Shadow Warrior, free.

You need to connect directly to them via their IP. You can check what your IP is by going to https://www.ipchicken.com This should work. Your friend might need to configure their router.

And apparently it's still a problem. If PC gaming is king then it should be at least as easy to use as a console. Especially for a product people spent money on.

I'm assuming hiring someone to do some netcode optimization is outside the company's current ability. Which is fine. But still, having said that, it's not fair to ask a subset of the community to pretend having to "configure your router" is a simple easy reasonable ask.

It's frankly immoral to scold gamers for not being tech savvy. Computers are a basic utility these days, not a lavish specialist optional toy like they were.

It simply isn't fair to demand this of all players in the face of existing technology. Any argument to the contrary is cherry picking and could be applies to any innovation ever.

Sidenote: I can setup a network for an entire company, and have. I'm not talking about me. In fact, if the code were open I could probably improve it myself. That's another reason it's fair to ask the devs to fix it, they choose to be the only ones with the power to do so.
there is a fix to this problem and i found that you are being prevented to ply together because that option is blocked by the windows firewall and in order to fix it you have to change the firewall settings so that it doesn't block network connection settings
