Otherwise, as of 1.3, one of the best ways to recover mana is to stand still. This won't really work while you're fighting skeletron, until you've taken out both of his arms. Then you can stand still while he uses his head spinning attack.
That is, assuming you're on normal mode. On expert, that's a death wish.
Otherwise, consider mashing more orbs and getting a meteor to fall, then mining up that meteor. The armor set has a set bonus that will fully negate your need for mana, with one of the meteor items' specific weapons, which should serve your purpose of figthing skeletron.
