I think I agree with you.
Yeah, you make a good point. I think the problem with the Twins was that I was doing a ton of cavediving more then I was doing surface exploring. Also, the spider pets seemed to hold of the Derplings and the Foxbats in the jungle better IMO. I didn't know how dangerous those enemies were until the Twins showed me by not killing them fast enough, or at least keeping them in place.
I think I'll do some boss fights and see where the two summons stand for a bit more clearification on the matter, but thanks everyone for your input, I greatly apppreciate it! :3
Spider Staff deals 200-300 damage per second in a very small area. Its minions cannot jump more than 20 tiles high.
Optic Staff deals 100-200 damage per second to all enemies in its path. Its minions get stuck in tight passageways.
As a result, the Spider Staff is better in general, but the Optic Staff is better in certain situations, such as fighting Wyverns.
Spider minions can be useful in a number of areas like caverns underground but against most bosses that tend to move around in open space your best bet would probably be the Optic Staff. The twin minions will get snagged by blocks easily because they aren't really designed to be used in closed-in spaces. That's why you use the spider staff in closed-in spaces.
Overall, this doesn't need to be an either-or. You should consider hanging on to both staffs and using each of them in their intended environment.
