Terraria Legacy
I'm sure this will have been asked numerous times before, but I would love to be able to install some earlier versions of Terraria to play with my rose tinted specs on. I started playing on Steam in October / November 2013 so I think that would have been v1.2.something, I didn't get the game in a DRM free form until about the Journey's end update, so I can never go backwards from there really, I suppose not many would..? Anyway, my laptop is crap and it would be good to get a really early version to install on it that might run better. The later versions are too demanding for it, so I have to always play on my PC. Anyhoo, I just thought it would be cool to go retro. I did look at it a few years back, but it got complicated quickly and I lost interest. To get hold of like a v1.2 installer would be mint! I think I have bought Terraria three times for myself, (one Steam, one GoG) I bought it twice as gifts for other, and even got a boxed version still wrapped in cellophane ;-) Love it! Any ideas anyone? :-)

Yeah, I'm not sure I'm ok with handing over my steam login details to some 3rd party software, but thanks anyway for the suggestion :-)

You are asking a question that no one can answer because it would be against steam TOS to tell you how to find an old copy of a game.

The only legit way to do it outside of finding an old boxed copy is the DepotDownloader which uses steam to download the old versions but that might not work anymore or won't be supported soon , I haven't used it myself but I've seen it mentioned on the forums that steam is removing support for this feature.

Asking someone to send you an old installer version most likely breaks steam rules as well , so don't do that.

https://forums.terraria.org/index.php?threads/terrariadepotdownloader-downgrade-to-any-version.107519/ the downgrade program is on the official terraria forums but I suppose if you want to play it safe just forget about it.

Your next best bet would be to download Tmod Loader if you don't have it already, this program allows you to play modded terraria but because there were compatibility problems when terraria 1.4 journey's end update came out the Tmod Loader took longer to update.

So if you right click Tmod loader , Properties , click Beta , click the drop down you will see a Legacy version option for terraria.

This will let you play Terraria 1.3.5.3 , on the other hand you could try getting 1.4 to work on your laptop by turning off "Backgrounds" "Parallax" turn lighting mode to "White". These things can give you a 10-20 FPS boost even on an old laptop , backgrounds off especially is a huge boost.

I heard that GOG Galaxy (their analog of Steam-client) has a feature to install old versions of games. Not sure about old offline GOG installers. And it's a totally official feature, not a hidden one as Steam's depots manipulating.

Yeah I had a quick look at the depot thing, as soon as it looked like you needed to enter your account details I decided to 'play it safe' I also had a look at TMOD, but you cant go back far at all. I actually have an installer from GOG cos I bought it from there too, so I can go as far back as v1.3.4.3, but that's not a massive step either. I was hoping for a pre-moonlord version.

I might try and install that and just bottom the graphic settings as you say, but the laptop is a bit of a donkey. It was my partners, and she went with the free upgrade from Win 7 to 10, and that just sucked all the life out of it in my opinion.

I wish I'd bought it from GOG whenever they started selling it originally, maybe I could have an archived v1.2 to play with now. Oh well. Hind sight eh...

Cheers anyway!

Yeah, oddly enough I e-mailed them yesterday via their site, and within an hour they got back to me, and to my surprise, mentioned that you could roll back (via GOG Galaxy) to v1.4.4.6v2 as you say, but again, barring compatibility issues, why would you? However he did hint that they 'might' be making earlier versions available in future (not sure if he meant via their platform, or as stand alone installers) but I'm quite excited by that, no promises mind. But fingers crossed! I mean, the earlier versions are all part of the 'journey' right? I'd love to be reminded of how far its come by being able to play a REAL legacy version. We'll see I guess... Thanks!

Overall, I think the developers have updated it in a very sympathetic way, so none of its charm has been lost in its, what? 12 year life time so far..? But I still think it would be super cool to go proper retro on Terraria again. I know it will create issues, but only in a backwards compatibility sense. Maybe the best way to do it is to have your bang up to date version on Steam (and I love how it plays still) and then have some separate worlds and players for ye olde Terraria you can play on your GOG version. (as long as you don't overwrite the Terraria folder in the process, it should be all good right?) I'm sure there are cleverer ways of doing it, but, yeah, I'm not as sharp with stuff like this as I used to be. Anyhoo, looking forward cross-play next year, and giving my Nephew (who plays on the Switch) a lesson in mouse & keyboard superiority ;-)

I have a world seed i generated in 1.3; it's my favorite one and i want to be able to generate it again, fresh. I actually do have an older copy of it saved, but sadly i forgot to keep a backup before i made some changes in Tedit.
