you dont need a class to play Terraria. And classes are different types of damage. And, sometimes armor helps buff different classes, like solar flare armor would help meelee class and other armor sets help class damage too.

You can play without a class they are just a way to play more organized, The classes are Melee which has the most defense, Ranger that has less defense than melee but has more dps and uses ammunition, mage which has even worse defense than ranged but has flashy projectiles and deal more dmg using mana, summoner which has the worst defense but has the most dps being able to summon minions and using a whip (minions cost a little bit of mana, whips use melee stats)

I think i will precise: it is usually better to always have a specific class loadout at any time. Ex: You don't need frost armor if you are using a magic weapon. Always try to match your weapons with the right armor and accessories for better efficiency.

During a playthrough, there is no limitations forced by the game. You decide which weapon class you want to use at any point / feel better and easier for certain boss fights. You are free to change your type of weapon at any point (provided you can change most of your equipment for a different class). Some players are doing class playthrough, where they limit their weapons to a specific class. But for your first playthrough, it is probably better to allow any weapons, to experiment with them, and see what work best for you.
