Look at the damage type.
Space gun does ~30 magic damage. MAGIC. It get's affected by things like the sorceror emblem, not the ranger emblem. Thus, it's magic.
Same for boomerangs. Melee damage. Not ranged.
Besides, if the set bonus for meteor armor is making the space gun cost no mana, why would it be a gun? It doesn't even shoot 'bullets'.
"I shoot something, it takes damage"
Then by that logic, does the rainbow gun count as a gun, even though it clearly does not shoot bullets?
If you go and start a guns and bows only playthrough, then you should make it perfectly clear what constitues a bow or a gun. At that rate, it is entirely up to you what weapons you want to include, and which ones you want to exclude.
I think it goes without saying that an iron sword wouldn't qualify.
If I were in your shoes, the best way I would define a "gun" would be anything that consumes bullets, and a "bow" as anything that consumes arrows. Then it becomes mostly clear what's allowed and what isn't. The stake launcher and stynger are a couple of examples of weapons that are major gray areas. Do these count as bows?
That is why the damage type is an even better metric. In fact, the three different shroomite sets lend themselves very nicely here. You could define the list of allowed weapons based on if they get the shroomite helmets' damage bonus or not. Then guns and bows are very clearly defined.
But again, it's your playthrough. You get the make the rules. It is entirely up to you what weapons you want to include, and which ones you want to exclude.
"a weapon incorporating a metal tube from which bullets, shells, or other missiles are propelled by explosive force, typically making a characteristic loud, sharp noise"
sharp noise? check, explosive force, possibly, metal tube, (How do I post pictures?)
(me·te·or·ite
/ˈmēdēəˌrīt/
noun: meteorite; plural noun: meteorites
a meteor that survives its passage through the earth's atmosphere such that part of it strikes the ground. More than 90 percent of meteorites are of rock, while the remainder consist wholly or partly of iron and nickel)
Thats disappointing, space iron. but yes, meteal or rock metal tube, check, bullets, possibly
3/4 if possibly is half a point
i'm going for yes
sorry for crappy format
Well, if you want to go there...

To my understanding, the space gun is, in fact, a laser, which itself is actually an acronym for Light Amplified by the Simultaneous Emission of Radiation. It doesn't shoot projectiles. It shoots photons which are not metal nor even have mass (although they do carry momentum, oddly enough.)
Photons are also not ejected via explosive force (whereas a bullet is accelerated by the combustion of gunpowder within the cartridge, which is the technical term for the whole bullet with the casing, powder, primer, and metal that flys out of the gun's barrel violently.)
By this udnerstanding and definition, the space gun does not qualify as such a chemically accelerated projectile weapon. Heck, it doesn't even qualify as a projectile weapon, but rather a highly focused and dangerous flashlight that somehow works through draining your mana.
But again, I re-state:
If your gut is telling you yes, then go with it. Otherwise, don't. The only reason I'm even replying to this repeatedly is because you asked for opinions.
I've laid mine out as extensively as I can without a wall of text even more offensive than what's already here. My understanding of the nature of the weapon would not qualify it as a gun, but as a laser.
By what is on the gamepedia page, it would seem that many people agree with the concept that it's a laser, not a gun.

Im 13 so thanks for letting me skip grade 10 science or whatever grade that is
Actually, it's high school or college physics level. Very few 13 year olds would have been there, so I really don't blame you.
But again,
and
I'm not trying to insult you. I'm just a nerdy senior electrical engineering student.
