Nothing, it’s a pet.

The shark pup is a "pet". Pets are one type of cosmetic loot you can find. Pets exist purely to look neat. They provide no benefit in combat so just use whatever one you like the most.

The only pet that gives a benefit, is the "Eye Bone" dropped by Deerclops that works as a walking chest (but the AI sucks a bit).

Those are cosmetic pets. Though there are few other types of pets that emit light, so they might be useful for something. There are also functional Light Pets that always emit light and/or highlight something.
