My friends and I were digging around after hard mode. We all found a golden chest, but it just wouldnt open, all it did when you clicked was open and shut with a little red dot in the middle. When we came up, all our house were just gone(except chests). A lot of things were destroyed. What was this thing?

Doesn't matter, as even mods can't be that sneaky so as to know exactly where your house is.

Instead, it sounds like some jerk in your group planted explosives in your house while you guys were digging, and wired it all up to a trapped chest and told the rest of your group he "found" something.

While I was reading it, I thought the place with the chest was rigged, then I read the part where it blew up your home. only way those things work is with placed wire and booms.

Pretty Evil and Slick. If you had a wrench or wire cutters you can see the cable going to your house.

ONLY way a mod would do something like that is if you build at the starting location

I built to the left of the location. Maybe my one friend did it maybe not. But if he did it doesnt make sense from where he did across the map the second time.

Er, what do you mean by that third sentence?

As for how your friend did it, The Grand Design item allows for INSANE wire placement and range. He could have hid the explosives in plain sight by painting them or something.

We were very far away when it happened. All three That were in the server were all in the same spot. Whelp it is what it is. Not a huge loss but i will find out tomorrow.

Trap chests do not spawn naturally so one of your friends must have taken the chest and replaced it with a trap chest. Then as long as you were within 2000 blocks of your house the wire would reach far enough to blow up your house. An easy way to check would be to get a wiring tool or a pressure plate to see if there are wires around your base and leading to the chest.
