And quite honestly, do you seriously think catching critters generated by, if even that, nothing but a click, then selling them or using them as bait equals playing the game in a legitimate way? If you want to have unlimited amounts of them you might as well get them from, say Builders Workshop. Sure, you might say that you don't get a whole lot of money off it and that farming critters is quite random otherwise, and you'd be right about that. But cmon, timed spawners?
Easiest way ever to farm bait is still the flower boots. There's a guide out there on the setup, but you basically just end up standing in place infinitely generating bushes that instantly explode and pop out hundreds of critters. - It's not only easier than statues, but also more efficient, so the statues being nerfed really isn't that big of a deal.
It's also not mentioned anywhere in the changelog, and I'm like 90% sure it was still working in 1.3
