Three of the items needed for PDA / Cell Phone can only be acquired through Angler quests.
You can get some nice pieces of equipment both from fishing and from quests.
Fish are ingredients in various potions, for example Lifeforce Potion (+20% max life) and Summoning Potion (+1 minion). Very useful for boss fights, especially on expert mode.
You can get metal bars, equipment, potions etc from crates. Once you enter hardmode, you can also get hardmode metal bars. If you stock up on high-grade crates, you can bootstrap your hardmode equipment.
Ammo reservation 20% chance not to consume ammo uses Double Cod.
Endurance Potion reduces damage taken by 10% uses Armored Cavefish.
Heartreach potion increases pickup range of life hearts uses Crimson Tigerfish.
Inferno Potions summons a fire barrier around the player uses flarefin koi and obisifish.
Lifeforce potion increases max life by 20% uses Prismite fish.
