Block placement super frustrating

Ok, what am I doing wrong?

Im TRYING to build a basic house (stone brick) but the placement just snaps to edges and corners I DONT WANT!

is this some new building mechanic? Been out of the loop of this game for a while...
How to build without fighting for block placement?
