First, most mods use a modloading program called tmodloader. It is releativly simple to install and is required for 90% of the mods. http://forums.terraria.org/index.php?threads/1-3-tmodloader-a-modding-api.23726/
Youtube on how to install tmodloader. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yad5LnqbKEU

Once you have installed tmodloader just run Terraria and open the modbrowser. If you find a mod you want simply press download.
Then go into mods and enable to mods then reload.
IMPORTANT
when you install tmodloader you might notice your charecters are gone. This is because it uses a seprate folder for using modded characters and worlds.
When you launch vanilla terraria all your old worlds and charecters will still be there.
it makes a seprate folder for you modded characters and worlds.
if you launch vanilla again you will have them there.
They are not gone.
You can also copy .plr files and .wld files from vanilla to modded folder, and vice-versa, but if you copy from modded to vanilla, all the modded content will be removed.
how would I then launch vanilla again?
You can launch vanilla if you uninstall modded, or copied all of the contents in the terraria folder to another folder so you have 2 terrarias. Then make 1 modded and keep the other one the same.
Oh and alot of good mods add content to both early and late game. So starting from scratch is still fun.
could anyone help me with that
??
