The Amber Mosquito is hands down the rarest item.
Nearly 17,000 fossil blocks and I'm yet to get a single one. Who here has actually managed to get one legit?

Let's all be aware that lower % doesn't necessary mean it's very hard to obtain. You also have to check how many times the game check for the possible drop per minute.
ex: RoD: 1 / 500 (0,002)
biome key drop for 1 / 2 500 per enemy in specfic biome (0,0004)
Mosquito amber: 27 / 100 000 (with desert fossil) or 1 / 10 000 (other blocks) (0,00027 or 0,0001)

So for only one check (kill one enemy or use one block), it is technically easier to obtain the RoD. Now, let assume that in one minute, we can do either:
- kill 10 chaos elementals
- kill any 50 enemies
- use 1 200 desert fossil at chlorophyte extractinator (yes i timed it)

So in 1 hour (60 min), you will have:
- killed 600 chaos elementals
- killed 3 000 enemies
- used 72 000 desert fossil blocks (theoretically. I know it is near impossible to have thie ammount of fossil legit)

So in AVERAGE, you could obtain per hour:

- 1 or 2 RoD
- 1 or 2 biome keys (about the same rate as RoD)
- around 19 - 20 mosquito ambers (much more than RoD or biome keys, despite having lower % chances).

Finally, we are still only talking about chances. It IS possible to be unlucky and get nothing, even after killing 1 500 chaos elementals, 10 000 enemies or using 10 000 desert fossils (Although it is unlikely). It IS possible to be lucky and get 1 RoD after only 100 chaos elementals, one biome key after killing 300 enemies, or getting an Mosquito amber after using 3 000 desert fossils (And again, it is unlikely). Eventually, the more times we do the check, the more likely we will obtain at least one item in the long run.

Getting 3 mosquito with just "200" blocks is technically possible. It's just extremely unlikely. And unless a video is presented, there is no way to know if it actually happened or not (also assuming no mods involved if we only talk about vanilla). So don't take what others says too seriously. Legit anyone can claim "i obtained *insert any rare item here* in minutes" with no way for anyone to see if it's true or not, and no one can claim it's impossible. That's how maths works about producing results. It's up to the people to interpret those results, and usually, people tend to screw themselves with random statistics.

I've gotten one legit before, but it was on a MUCH older build of the game.
I haven't had one in the 1.4+ builds.

Well since this post, I'm happy to report that after 50,000+ blocks (My tracker shows 51,742), I have yet to get a single one. It's funny as I have never had an issue where I had to farm more then 1-2 hours for a few RoD's, and while biome key's are rare yes, the rates at which you farm enemies make it allot less effort (Easy afk farms for it too). So yes, never wrap your head around a fixed number, there are allot of conditions that can alter the true rarity.

Glad I am not alone on this!

Funny enough I have have gotten the occasional Amber Mosquito when extractinating stuff, never thought how rare it was.

Amber Mosquito? I'll raise you:
-The Mystic Frog when you have powder in your inventory
-Moonglows when you are actually trying to look for them
-Water walking boots
-Vampire frog staff when you actually need it
-Queen Bee hives when you need them as well

The issue with all these are they are not rare due to the ability to use seeds / world viewers. The Amber Mosquito is true RNG :c

If you manually shut down the game instead of saving and exiting, it goes back to your previous save, meaning you can open the same crate over and over until you get the item you need.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
