If you like it clean and tidy you can build the biome either in a long thing line underground with lines above and under allowing you to collect them.
You can link a dart trap at the start of the biome, however this personally just makes more effort because you still have to run and collect them. My preferebce would be hitting them with a sword personally makes it more easy overall as you're collecting the mushrooms + seeds along the way. However if you compact this form of biome the amount of mushrooms you can yield can be good and can be bad but all depends upon the size of the biome that you create.
If you decide to build your artificial biome on the surface this can be a little problematic as it varies on how big you're going to build the biome, are you going to build it on the earth and tranform the earth into the biome? (This is the cleaner method but can make you lose mushrooms if you don't want the biome massive and can lead to hardcore monsters attacking you.
If you decide to build it on the surface but with a long strip at the top of the earth can help you yield the same amount as a underground biome but this would allow you to collect the mushrooms alot easier as there's only one long strip, compared to a underground one where there's multiple strips.
Other than that, I make one row 3 blocks high, that fits the character to walk/run through it. I then make another row 1 block high. The sword can reach that area also. Above that 1 block-high area, I then repeat the pattern of using growing space that is 3-blocks, then 1-block.
If you plan ahead and want to have truffle worms, you can also make a longer area of mushroom growth, so you can easily capture the worm. This setup should be underground at least, and at a certain depth.
Whatever size you end up with, after harvesting several hundred mushrooms, you won't need the farm as much anymore. So consider the case of how much time you have for harvesting (before you need x amount of mushrooms) and how much you want in each harvest. If you start early in easy mode, you will have plenty for use in potions and in hard mode.
That's good.
This pattern is pretty easy. Compact, lots of surfaces. Yields about 250 mushrooms each harvest. Only thing is, I would recommend those "shelf" sections only be 2 wide instead of the 3 in the picture - sometimes the middle mushroom requires cutting to reach.
