But other than that, I've made a cactus farm by having 1 layer of sand set out on a long path in the air, which was held in place by a block that does not fall (such as stone block). Let's say that path is about 20-50 blocks long or however long you want to make it.
You can then make another similar path about 10-20 blocks above, and make several similar rows. You'll get ant lions, vultures, and cactus, prickly pear, etc. I haven't seen waterleaf growing naturally in my cactus area, so I plant waterleaf separately in another garden.
From what I'm reading, it sounds like you put the wood on top of the sand, but I know that can't be right.
