Full molten armor is the way to go if you're looking for defense, and the full set also buffs your melee damage by 17%.
You're aware that only applies to Melee, right? The Pheonix Blaster (24 or so Ranged damage) and the Demon Scythe (35 Magic damage, pierces 4 enemies and stops after hitting the 5th) are both Pre-Hardmode, they're both better (arguably), and neither is a sword.
Depends on what kind of job you're trying to do. For chopping down trees, it's the Molten Hamaxe. For busting out walls, it's the Molten Hamaxe. For mining, it's the Molten Pickaxe or the Reaver Shark (Both have 100% Pickaxe Power).
I am. I just reckoned that i wasn't going to throw every single damage type at his face would be confusing, and i'd already started out with the Night's Edge, so i thought i'd go with melee.
Also at this point, even a non-summoner character can also carry around an imp staff for company or additional damage support.
