Minecraft is only good for building, Terraria is good for bulding and fighting.
Terraria wins in the aspect of story. Both are sandbox style games so you can do what you want, but Terraria gives a lot more stuff to do as far as a character progression.
If this is about whether or not Terraria is worth the $10 price tag, I believe it is. There's plenty of content to keep you busy. I, myself, have been playing for hundreds of hours and haven't even scratched the surfact. Still not sure? Wait for a sale. The last time Terraria went on sale, it was $1.99 USD. That's pretty friggin' cheap for something that can last well over 1000 hours in game.
This is really useful information.
One thing I dislike about Minecraft is the scale of things; your character is 1x2 blocks high and everything is scaled towards that so details may get lost when trying to work on a small scale.
In Terraria my character is 2x3 blocks high, giving me more room to fit in details; that and Terraria has a crap-load of props to add, something severely lacking in Minecraft.
But when it comes down to what I prefer; I'd go with Minecraft.
