I've seen people with weird problems, but this... seriously, how hard is it to open doors man? :D you can put a pressure plate in front and behind the door and connect them to the door so that when you walk on them the door will open and shut by itself...

maybe you place something near the door and block the way the door.

True, but because that gives any random monster access to your house as well it isn't generally a desirable way to handle it.

That being said, I can't say i've had any trouble opening doors at all. They won't open in the direction of any object placed right up against them but other than that, it's a pretty simple system.

There are pressure plates which only can be triggered by players (blue/brown/grey/lihzahrd)

I thought somebody would say this but I guess I have to say it, why would you ever place doors when you can have active blocks...? It looks a lot cooler and no one can open it except you...

Never knew the reasons for the different colored plates. And now that I know they can stack to 999...well, I guess I'll never leave one behind again in the underground!

Not sure if srs, but:

You can use to make an upside down T formation of wire that's connected to 3 active blocks (it can be an unlimited number, but 3 is the height of a door) and 2 brown pressure plates (so only you can activate them) on either side. This way the door opens when you hit the first one and closes when you hit the second one.

you can also just put actuators on kind of blocks for the same effect as the active blocks
Sounds more like you haven't played this game at ALL.

The two things I generally do are either set up a switch that ONLY closes all doors at once, or else make it so the only way out of the housing complex is via rope or trapdoor, which npcs (and mobs) can't possibly use.

Doors open just fine if you simply right-click on them, but be warned that the direction you're facing dictates which way the door opens. If there's an object preventing the door from being opened on one side, you need to open it by facing in the right direction.
