Containing the Corruption
I read on the wiki that you can stop the spread of correction by digging a 3 block hole all the way to the underworld. Does this 'hellavator' need to be straight or can it be a bit zig-zaggy? Does anyone have an idea of how fast the corruption spreads?

I have a 'h3llevator'. It does not spread that fast. If you have a Dryad click "Status". You might want to get to work though.

Do you also have to destroy the dirt wall to stop the spread of corruption?

Nope. It only spreads through some blocks(dirt, stone, ice, snow, sand). Also, when containing the coruption, make sure you isolate any corupt grass with wood, or else the thorns will spread the coruption. Same with vines.

If you are preparing for it, then usually you will want to make this hellevator before going to hard mode. Otherwise, make it the same in hard mode, and just use the cleaner tool to take care of any in the areas you don't want (or the parts near your home).

Thorns can't spread through rope, so if you build a 3-block wide hellevator with a rope in the middle, as long as the rope is maybe 2 character hights tall above the grass, the thorns will not spread to the other side.

It can be either. Zig-zag will be slower to dig and slower to move in, though. So long as it's 3 blocks wide, the Crimson/Corruption/Hallow won't be able to move past it.

Good luck containing it, OP.

I always protect an ocean and the area around my base by digging a 4 wide tunnel straight down and then running underneath my base, and line it on the corrupt side with wood. Trying to limit it's spread otherwise is kind of a waste. Whenever you break an altar to spawn hardmode ore deposits a random block somewhere in the world gets turned to corruption of hallow. So just protect what is vital to you. Once in hardmode it won't be long before you get the clentaminator and controling the biomes becomes super easy.
