Mining helmet : best item in the game so far.
So I've been playing this game for about 50h now, and I have to say, buying the mining helmet ASAP is an absolute necessity. Having to carry torches and stop whatever digging you may be doing every 10 sec to place a torche becomes really tedious after some time.
Torches do act a beacons but basically everything displayed on the map, you have seen it, so placing beacons isn't really useful.
It IS pretty nice to be able to see the path ahead (or behind) whenever exploring though. So I do keep torches in my inventory and place some whenever I return places I'll probably go through several times.
But for mining and pathfinding, torching are pretty worthless and tedious.

I find the mining helmet not very good, in my opinion. It doesn't give as much light as a torch and you can't leave them around so you might get ambushed. I use torches all day every day. Not to mention if you drop a torch you can see how deep a drop is.
I felt the same way in my first playthrough. But unfortunately, the mining helmet becomes a bad thing really quickly. The 1 defense won't do and the helmet breaks your set bonus for other sets.

There are also other items in the game that can mostly do the same job for you.

It'd be good if you could get it earlier but 8 gold for 1 defense and a mobile torch is not good.

Oh yeah, I also forgot to mention that... the price is just too much and is better spent elsewhere.
I carry the mining helmet and torches. Helmet is good for when exploring new areas, especially if you fall down a hole. Sometimes I die, not from falling, but from the monsters in that hole area that I can't even see to fight.

I put the torches down whenever I remember to. I also think there will be times I go through the area without the mining helmet (because of the same reasons mentioned above that I want my full defense points or armor set bonus), and it's better to see.
A full set of Chlorophyte armor will light up the area to a lesser extent; it's free and has a much higher defense rating but you'll have to wait for it nd then work for it.

And it's also damn near end-game.

From what I can tell, OP is just getting into some of the more intricate parts of the early-game.
I just get used to switching to torches there a great source of light and are neede so mobs dont spawn from behind in trecharous caves

Warning you now, they'll spawn anyway.

Literally all torches are good for is providing light to see by.

True but torches lighting behind you is always good when your being chased by mobs and need to get out quick

I don't mind carrying torches. I've always enjoyed lighting up anywhere I have ever gone with torches. The Wisp-in-the-Bottle is a lot better since it doesn't take your head slot.

That name Though

Wisp in a bottle and Fairy Bell are better sources of light late game. Not to mention the Shadow Orb if you have a Corrupt world.
Eh, the only light source I bother with other than torches is the wisp in a bottle (not counting certain weapons/armor that produce light.) It's the only light source that can keep up with you and doesn't waste an equipment slot. It's just unfortunate that it's only available so very late in the game.

There are some good item choices along the way though. Like the enchanted boomerang which can even be used to scout a little into the walls with the light particles it casts off.
Come to think of it, whenever I see instances where players refuse a full set of way stronger armor, merely so that they can keep the mining helmet's glowing feature, I want to bite myself. Even torches are better if they will allow you to become stronger.
