The trees should grow if you knock out the back wall. Trees need sunlight to grow. Torches just won't work. The biomes don't matter, as long as the acrons are placed on sand. Which I can see they are, based on your many little coconut saplings. So yeah, you should be good to go as soon as you knock out the back wall. Also make sure you've got at least 16 tiles for the trees to grow in, and saplings only mature when you're off screen.

the place is 18-22 tiles high and yeah, I'll remove the dirt wall :)

your not in an ocean/desert biome

That dosn't matter. All you need to do in order to get a palm tree is to plant an acorn in a 2x6 block cump of sand. You can plant palm trees anywhere except in the Corruption, the Crimson, or the Hallow. Likewise, boreal trees can grow outside of snow biomes as long as they have a 2x6 block clump of snow. Jungle trees will grow anywhere there is mud with jungle grass seeds, and so will mushroom trees. The type of biome is irrelevent as long as there is no back-wall.

Actually, there must be at least 7 blocks high water (ocean) in the area above ground level with at least one block high sand below it and then you can put sand next to that and plant seeds. But I just went to the ocean and did it there since it was a small map.

I've tested that, waited for 2 days (game time) but nothing. Wiki is wrong about that, you must be on an Ocean biome to grow plam trees, you can plant them however, but they don't grown if they are not on ocean biome.

This took less than 24 in-game hours to grow. It is close to my original spawn-point, meaning it is near the center of my map, and consequently VERY far from any ocean biome.

All trees need at least 15 blocks of vertical space and at least 3 blocks of horizontal space to grow. You most likely aren't meeting those requirements. Palm trees can grow ANYWHERE there is no back-wall. So try not to be so dismissive next time, please.

Then I guess my aritificial biome for palm trees is mising out something, maybe because it's a closed area and is below 0 level or something, tho I opened the background so that the trees would get sunlight...

Make sure there is enough room. Even saplings require a 3x15 block space in order to grow. The palm tree in my screenshot also has six blocks of sand to grow on. Three blocks is manditory, but add a second layer of sand below that just to be safe.

Being below 0 level would be the start of the Underground layer and have a permanent background, meaning no sunlight and (usually) no trees. Jungle Trees and Mushroom Trees are special.

You DO have to be offscreen for trees to grow. Could that be the problem with your farm?

If you choose to have a floating palm tree forest, you can place your sand on any stable block, including platforms.

You can grow palm trees in a sand farm. I did above ground., but not underground. You need direct sunlight.

I did this right now, took it 2 minutes (real time) to grow. But somewhy those palms didn't grow down there, there are 2 layers of sand, pretty much bigger version of what you did. Damn, dafuq is wrong with that place, maybe that mushroom biome is somehow affecting it or maybe because it is a closed area, I'll think of something else, I'll make a closed area like that in the sky, if it's not because of it being below 0 ground level then it's because of... idk, screw this!

The place is 21 blocks high... can't be the height or the width.

You can't grow trees below 0 feet unless they are jungle trees or mushroom trees. Your idea can work as long as it is above 0 feet and there are no back-walls. Don't give up. Find a depth meter (they drop from cave bats) and keep trying. You may need to change a few things. That's all.

I killed like 1000 bats, I was farming the wormm for Duke Fishron, found 20 worms, killed 1000 cave bats, but nothing... except 5 banners and random useless drop. Meh... Y U NO drop depth meter '~'

Unlike other trees, palm trees require to be planted on only one block of sand, and only one space is needed between the seed and another object for the tree to grow.
