I believe they appear in cavern layer (the one above hell/underworld) and not underground layer.

The key I learned with my current farm is that they spawn off screen, and almost always with other mobs. (Although they're a somewhat rare spawn, making it hard to gather them.)
For the catching part, assuming you don't want to make the semi-automated farm, the easiest way to do it is to swing the net while falling on top of them. I've honestly had almost no difficulty with catching the buggers. I've got over 150 of the darn things and only three have evaded my grasp. I can usually run over toward them with my frostspark boots and nail them easily.
It's easiest with a flat area, if you want to do it manually. You still need to build quite a line of mushroom grass. I'd suggest (and personally use) the kind of blocks the guide writer has, right below all the ramps. Doing that makes the area a glowing 'shroom biome, which allows the worms to spawn.
Oh, and another thing... there's another critter spawn in the glowing mushroom biome... a glowing snail. They pretty much always get killed when they spawn, as they spawn alongside the regular mobs that want to turn you inside out. The worms, however, can't be killed by other mobs, so don't be concerned if you hear the splattering sound of a critter getting it. But do be careful... the worms can be killed by your attacks.
Since then it's become kind of a regular thing for me. Right now I'm doing it as a passtime...
It's really fine - I do like detail/people speaking from experience. Anyone who can help is great.
The resoultion size you're playing in is huge. I built the entire darn farm just to find out it wouldn't work because I did it wrong due to a detail that wasn't mentioned in the guide. All that building, hammering the mud into ramps, waiting for the infernal mushroom grass to spread over the mud... mostly wasted. I wanted to spare the original poster from the same pains I went though.
And if you want to see a huge essay, I can shell out more than a thousand meaningful words on a topic which I have experience on in less than an hour. And as an added bonus, I can make it pointless if you wanted me to.
I am glad for any information - that is good to know. And I know exactly what you mean - if there is a topic I know stuff about you better bet I am going to be there to answer in a lengthy detailed manner.
I stood in a biome for 5 minutes and saw four, three of which I captured.
