Why doesn't this game have an item sorting functionality?
A game with 100s, if not 1000s of items simply MUST have a way to sort through the stuff... doing it manually is so tedious.

just use Quick Stack?

Quick stack is NOT item sorting. All it does it put similar items into a stack. That is not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about sorting items based on rarity, quantity, type, ect.

eh, I have no problem putting them in chests manually. Once I have my stuff organized, I dont need to search because I know where everything is and auto stack deposits without trouble.

It's really an archaic nuisance in an otherwise great game.

Does minecraft have it?

If not, you shoudn't expect it.
If so, terraria isn't minecraft (and also has a better crafting system), so...

Well, last time I checked ( Admitedly, its been a few months ) MC has a MOD for that. Though it is not something just naturally in the game. That is as far as I know of course.

Well, as i've said many times before; a game doesn't get credit for the work of its modding community.

That being said, some item sorting certainly would be nice. It hasn't proven to be that big a deal to me overall since, as batabii pointed out, a little organization and the quick stack feature make things fairly simple but it could save a lot of time in the organization process.

I get the feeling you just like to argue for the sake of argument.

Personally I wish there was an item-sorting mechanic. It wouldnt be all that hard to program in.

It would save a ~lot~ of time for players like me, who hate the idea of losing anything in a permanent sense.

I keep 1 of every type of item in existence in the Gold Chests I take from underground. Such as weapons, equipment, accessories. I use Special Dungeon Chests for other such Special loot, like from the events (Halloween, Xmas, etc). I use regular chests for common goods like Monster-drops (Lenses, Rotten Chunks, Mandibles) and for regular building blocks.

That is the most "sorting" that we can do. When it comes to actually putting the items in, it can be an arduous process that takes way longer than it should, even when you know exactly where everything is and what goes where.

I wish we could also label chests from the outside.
I know you can change the "name" of a Chest once you're looking at it, but what I mean is - You should be able to set the name of the Chest to appear if you mouse over it, even when far away.

So you can quickly move your mouse over your line of Chests and it'd show up like 'Blocks, Tools, Monster Goods, Items' or whatever else you name them.

Great idea man. I'll suggest all this on the forums.

There's so many different kinds of chests, I just use a different one for each so I remember which is which. For example, using a Barrel for ammo, and the Lihzahrd Chest for wiring and traps, etc.

Also I sort my items by what they DO, not what they COME FROM. Rotten Chunks and Lenses go under Summon items (for bosses), one chest is nothing but Ore and Bars, one is Dye and the items which make them, one for Plants and Seeds (cactus, wood, deathweed, etc), one for Bait and Critters, and so on.

We know. There are lots of different types of chests, however, this isnt what we're talking about.

Its about adding an item-sorting mechanic. Adding like-similar items to and from containers or auto-sorting your own inventory without the need to do it individually. This is seperate from quick-stacking. It more pertains to quick-sorting the spaces in your inventory to be the most space efficient, combining like items if there is room and also sorting them automatically in a categorical layout in your inventory.

For example, your inventory is full of random blocks, a few summon items, an item or accesory or two.

You press the auto-sort button and it'd combine and put all the basic "blocks" on the left side of your inventory. Then summon items get their own column. Then items and accessories on the far right. Just as an example.

The same applied to Chests, as well as being able to auto-sort put similar-like items in there too, seperate from Quick-Stacking. For example if you have just upgraded your Pickaxe from Gold to Crimsteel.

You open a Chest filled with tools (Pickaxe, Hammers, Axe). You press auto-sort and it'd take the Gold Pickaxe from your Inventory and put it in the Chest, arranging them in the columns ordering "worst" to "best", whilst leaving your best-best item, the Crimsteel Pick, still in your own inventory.

The problem would be that everyone sorts items in their own way, and the game can't know exactly how you want your items sorted.

You can use this argument for absolutely everything in existence.

So dont.

It'd be better to have an auto-sorting system. If you dont like the way it handles your items, dont use it. We can still arrange items as we personally prefer.

But in some scenarios, it'd be very beneficial to have it, such as when unloading mass amounts of items you wish to store into and out of specific chests, rather than having to do it item-by-item when Quick-Stack doesnt apply.

Also, when auto-sorting your own Inventory, fixing up the jumble of random stuff into neat 'categories' by column and similar-like items. It would not affect the "active" bar, you know, the uppermost inventory bar 1 through 9.

I'd be satisfied if someone would release the Gameiki inventory sorter standalone.
