Beyond that, I've no clue. Been much too long since I took that Comp. Repair course.
It reduces performance because the dust gathers, either slowing down fans, or clogging up the heatsinks, both causing the components to raise in temperature a bit. A simple test would be to check the temperatures and fans, via a third-party program.
A computer that is overheating will likely have a slight (depending on how severe it is) burning smell, performance issues, crashes/hangs, unexpected shutdowns, and, if the graphics chip/card is overheating, visual artifacts. If your hard disk drives are over-heating, you may be presented with things like data loss and bad sectors.
I find that issues with performance in games are typically a cause of the following:
1. Issues with the game itself, perhaps by bad coding or bad optimisation. (seems to popular today, which is why I don't tend to bother with many AAA games, anymore)
2. Driver-related issues, such as an improperly installed driver, the wrong driver, a bad version of a driver, an old driver, a driver conflict, etc.
3. Insufficient hardware. (PSU, GPU, CPU, and RAM are usuals)
4. Improperly configured/optimised hardware/software.
End of Lesson. xD
Heart, do you have issues with other games, as well? Issues that weren't there before. If not, then it's likely something to do with Terraria itself, or a mod you've perhaps installed for it. Could be way too many things, but I think that'd be the most likely. Sometimes it stutters for me, when it previously didn't, but it's rare that it happens. (not an old computer, either)
If it's any consolation, it looks like other people also have this issue, or have had it in the past:

In the thread, the Frame Skipping feature is mentioned, so maybe try toggling that? It's in the video options within Terraria.
