best depth for monser farming arena

Which depth level would be the best for an empty space built to manually farm mobs?
I have built these things before but I am unsure about the ideal place in a small world because some monsters only spawn at certain depths.

Caverns for mimics

I usually make them in the caverns.
Should I build it in the "upper part" of the cavern layer or should I build it in the layer where lava pools are?

Upper layer.
maximise your spawn rates w/ potions and candles
they'll spawn off screen
if you use minions i think they'll aggro when they're attacked by minions
