How do you like Terraria on the Steam Deck?
I recently got my Deck, after more than a year of waiting. There's a lot of games that I think will work well on the Deck, but some games are just better with a mouse and keyboard. My question, for those who have experience playing Terraria on the Deck, how is it, and what's you're preferred control scheme? After just a brief moment of play (i.e. 2-3 minutes), I found some quirks, like talking to the Guide from pretty far away instead of shooting my grappling hook. Jump being on a trigger feels a bit weird. A tip told me I could open the radial menu by holding R1 and L1, but it doesn't seem to work.

I'm sure I'd get used to it, but is there a compelling reason for me to play on the Deck if PC is an option? Terraria just doesn't seem like a game that's designed for gamepad-style controls, even if they've done a good job of making them functional. But if the experience can be just as good as with a mouse and keyboard, then I'm willing to give it a shot.

That's what I was afraid of. I know they've done a lot of work making it as good as they can for people on console or mobile, where mouse and keyboard isn't an option, and as I understand it, most of that has carried over to the Deck. But given the option it still feels like mouse and keyboard just works better.

It's like with shooters: sure, Halo first came out on Xbox and it worked well enough there, but after playing it on PC with a mouse and keyboard I just can't go back to using a gamepad.

Generally, I prefer mouse and keyboard for games that are either in first person (e.g. Skyrim) or rely heavily on aiming. I prefer a gamepad for games more focused on movement, such as platformers or sandbox games (e.g. Assassin's Creed). For games in the middle, where joystick movement is helpful and aiming is infrequent (e.g. Dragon's Dogma), I can get by using a gyro to fine tune my aim. Even a game like Super Metroid, with 8 directional aiming, is just fine with a SNES gamepad. But Terraria requires enough precision that it needs a mouse, and Terraria doesn't benefit from joystick movement over a D-pad or WASD.

I think terraria is fine on controller the problem is on the pc version they did not put in any effort into controller support like it has in consoles. It’s literally the bare minimum and sucks to play on steam deck.
