If you are talking about the altar, then you would have needed to beat golem to get a picksaw to break it. if you are talking about the power cells you can get them by killing the lizhards

you could fight plantara again to get the key back and then go into a new world and fight golem there until you get the picksaw so you can mine the alter and bring it back to your main world.

well, if you mean the altar you can get a new one in a random new world, by using clipping, you dont even need a key. if your talking about the cell, then do what op's said.
