Worlds/characters saved to Cloud are gone after new drive
Hi. I'm confused as to how the Cloud saving works, because I saved my 600+ terraria world and character to the Cloud, yet when I reinstalled the game after purchasing a new hard drive, there were only a few of the worlds I had saved to the Cloud available. What the hell happened, and how can (if at all) can I fix it???

I'm 100% sure I had that world saved to the cloud since it was my largest one.

If you have steam cloud syncing turned off either globally or for this specific game, your data will not cloud sync even if you have Terraria using the cloud folder. Further:

If you are not seeing your most recent progress and you have double-checked that the game uses Steam Cloud on its store page, either Steam was not able to sync successfully with Steam Cloud before closing, or the sync resulted in a previous version of your data being uploaded to the cloud.

It’s possible that the original file or progress is still on the older machine, but was unable to sync. It may be possible to launch Steam from that machine and see if it will Sync the game. If that works, the progress should be available on the newer machine the next time you launch.

You can view your steam cloud storage at: https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage
Terraria, specifically, at: https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorageapp/?appid=105600

I find the cloud feature to be finicky. Sometimes it does backup my save files to the cloud. Sometimes it uses the save files on the cloud and overwrite my local save files, which have resulted in wiping out several hours of progress. I have learnt to manually backup my own save files. There are various services out there that allows you to upload files. This video shows how to manually backup a save file.

FWIW, I have my backup service making nightly backups of my entire steam userdata folder, "My Documents", and a few others as well. Because even when the cloud service is working perfectly, it's still not a backup - it can't go to old versions in the event of file corruption or something like that.

Even if you did everything right, the cloud saving for Terraria tends to delete characters and worlds saved to it, and as such, should never be used. Hopefully the other solutions others suggested work, or you still have access to your old drive and they are still on there. Regardless of if you recover your data or not... take this as a lesson to not use the built in cloud in the future for Terraria.

You're absolutely right. I found an old manual save on another computer from a year ago so I suppose not all is lost, but I don't think I'll be relying on the Cloud again to save my files. Thank you.

Haha, I guess I learnt the hard way, yeah. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks a lot for the link. It doesn't hold my old save files but I can now see if things I newly add to the cloud are actually there. I didn't know about this page, very handy!

Just lost 120 hours of dedication to the cloud save bug. Lost my old worlds when I wiped my computer 2 years ago thinking that steam would save my worlds, so to be safe this time I saved it to the cloud.... Played 100+ hours then one morning I launch my world to an error message. I've now done extensive research and to sum it up, if you see "Load failed! No backup found!" then you're unfortunately $hit out of luck. This needs to be spread around more to even the most casual of players so people know before hand. It's an incredibly crushing feeling as you all know. Extremely sad that Re-Logic has no idea a game breaking bug like this wont be fixed at least any time soon.

Its not Relogics fault, its just how steam's cloud saves work which notoriously corrupts data in multiple games.

to "fix it" in the future, make backups on google drive or a separate storage location. the integrated cloud system isnt that relyable
