Pond size for fishing - fist time fishing

I haven't fished in Terraria before. I'm not even sure if fishing was in the game last time I played it (it was quite a long time ago). Everywhere I read online says a body of water has to be 75 connected tiles deep but I'm successfully catching things, including crates in much smaller bodies of water, natural areas of water, so I'm really confused. I'm in Hardmode so having to build a pond close to my base so I'm not hassled by mobs.

Ah, I see. Thanks for that! So much better than an massive hole.

Although, still doesn't explain how I've been able top fish in small ponds. Unless it's because I'm playing Journey mode.

Also iirc only tiles with air above counts, so if you have a bridge directly on top of the water this makes it smaller.

I made a bridge over the water but four blocks above the water. I assume that's fine.

One other thing. Each time I get a quest from the angler I go build a pond in that biome. By the time I've done that and filled it with water I don't get the fish, apparently ran out of time because the angler gives me a new quest when I speak to him.

How many ponds do I need to build FIRST? One each for the each biome above and below ground? Including in the sky?
