NPC gravestones
Hi, I want to minimize how many npcs I have to kill to collect for a graveyard (playing hardcore). One npc that will unavoidably die several times is the guide when I farm emblems, so what must I do to make sure I always get a gravestone from him? Will it spawn even if he's far away on the surface? Can it despawn if it doesn't "plant itself"?

The gravestone will always appear
Gravestone who can't plant themself despawn. You can put furniture all over the place to prevent any valid spot.
Ok, so when do they despawn? If I want to make sure it doesn't how can I put him in a way that it will definitely plant, because obviously a house needs some furniture to be valid.
Tombstones need an empty 2x2 space in order to settle. They will bounce around a short distance until they come to a space where they can plant themselves. If they can't plant themselves, they will just lay where they land, not properly affixed to the ground. The wiki did not state an exact time but, experimenting on my own a little, I found that tombstones that have not settled will despawn after about 1 minute. That's not a lot of time if you're away from home base while an NPC dies in an inconvenient spot. I suppose one way you could give a tombstone a better chance to settle properly is to space out your furniture indoors so that there are empty 2x2 gaps for the thing to land. Also, just to warn you, the Angler and Princess will not drop tombstones since they "leave" rather than die like the other NPCs.
You might be able to control where NPCs die by using wired King and Queen statues. Those can teleport random NPCs to the location of the statue, where you can possibly set up some sort of death trap for them. An alternative would be to bring a trap to them, such as boulders dropped on their heads until they die. Boulders are pretty easy to craft using 6 stone blocks each and a Heavy Work Bench. Just be careful not to be in the way when you make them drop. What I like to do is stack some boulders on a wooden platform over the head of the target NPC and then use a pickaxe to trigger them to drop.

I built a graveyard with my own tombstones.

This is only possible to do if you are playing with a non-hardcore character, since a hardcore character can only die once and then they are gone. It is, of course, possible to bring in a different character and kill them repeatedly to provide the hardcore character with tombstones, however, some players may not wish to do this.

Ok, thanks. Yes I'm playing master mode so wof will definitely take more than 1 minute before I can get back to where the guide died. I guess if I space out the table and chair with 2 spaces on either side it will be enough?

I assume that would be enough space. You could probably also put the table and chair on wooden platforms nearer to the ceiling so that they free up the ground, although that could look odd interior decorating-wise.

You could maximize potential empty space by placing a workbench, leave two tiles space, then chair. The tombstone should be able to reliably settle between the chair and table if it decides to bounce that direction, but it will look similarly odd to the suggestion above.
