If it's not in the Steam Cloud, check your trash bin for older backups.

since the map exploration data is stored on the players (and not in the world itself), maybe you could try to load the world in a map viewer such as Terramap and see if the changes your old character(s) did are still there (houses built, tunnels dug, cabins looted) by setting spoilers to "all spoilers" or checking if there are players to pick in the spoilers' menu and picking each one of said players to check how much of the map remains black. if Terramap doesn't help you, then you may have to take a walk on the wolrd again. I don't know if Tedit has any functions that could help you with this problem (it can (re)dig your old tunnels and (re)build your old houses, but I don't know if it can (re)add map exploration data to your players).

as for the crashing, I suggest you get your saves off the cloud, disable cloud saves for this game and make regular manual backups, as several people in this forum have reported having their saves corrupted by the cloud. and check if there is something wrong with your computer (corrupted registry, malware, outdated drivers) that could be causing problems in your game. the only time I experienced crashes in Terraria was when half of my computer's registry was corrupted to the point the browsers and antivirus refused to work.
