You are meant to break the heart crystals. They do nothing just sitting there, but if you break them you get them as an item and then you can use them to increase your hp or craft health regen items.

Breaking 3 demon orbs (shadow orbs) summons a boss. It is good to break 1-2 since the first drops an item that makes the arms dealer available to move into an empty house.
