How to *not* pause on alt tab
I looked it up and it seems like they removed the option from the game, more or less. I'm aware I can do a private multiplayer game all by myself, but is there no generic settings option for it?

It doesn’t pause unless you have “auto pause” enabled in the settings

I specifically want it not to pause. I have auto pause disabled.
Another way to put it is I do not want terraria to pause when the window loses focus.

Auto pause is for when you go into your inventory- if it's on then the game pauses during that time.

I know what auto pause is lol, that’s why I posted the suggestion, as pressing “alt+tab” (tab being the button to open inventory) would be the only way that would cause your game to pause.

Not sure what you mean by “I do not want terraria to pause when the window loses focus”. What do you mean by “the window loses focus”?

Alt Tab generally means switching to a different window. Focus indicates which window your mouse is interacting with.
Most games will pause if you alt tab or switch focus, including this one. Most games also have an option to turn that off- usually "pause when focus lost". Terraria.. doesn't, as far as I see.

*facepalm* I’m think of turning on the steam overlay, which is “shift+tab”, long day, my b.

Can’t say I know of any way to make it work with alt+tab, a lot of older games pause when alt tabbing, which might have to do with limitations of older game engines. I’m no professional though, so that’s my best guess.

Har, well, thanks for trying.
Pretty sure the only answer is "play alone in multiplayer" but a guy can dream.

Yup that's pretty much the only solution.

I was worried about that.

It seems like for whatever reason the devs explicitly *do not* want the game to run when it doesn't have focus. They patched out ways to do it a handful of times. Whack.

my best workaround without having to go into multiplayer is to go into windowed mode, pull up whatever other window i wanted to view, then click on the windowed terraria to keep it going. its how i used to AFK farm while also watching videos.

And what is the problem with multiplayer for yourself only?

You can block Terraria using the Firewall if you are suspicious of where the game might connect to.
Sometimes I *do* want to pause, and it's a pain to shut down the world just to do it. Especially early on when everything is a walk.

I was looking for a way to bypass this same limitation. I started playing again a year ago and found the Skeleton Merchant at the beginning of a new run + new character and got the Magic Lantern light pet. I didn't realize how lucky I was to run into him on the only night of the moon cycle he sells that item and now on yet another new run + character (new PC, no backups) I found that I have to wait about 68 minutes until the game cycles to the Full Moon and I can buy it again :etgpilot: pretty lame, but I guess I'll go find something to do irl for an hour... It's worth it to me lol

It's been awhile, but iirc I wanted not to pause so I could do something else on my computer while waiting on a skeleton merchant too. Kek.
