How do I make a pumping system?

Me and my friend are trying to make a hot tub(pool with lava under it, idea comes form the Island by Max Brooks) and are trying to make a system which allows you to drain the water with one switch and make it reenter the tub with another. A loading screen tip mentioned the Mechanic and her items allowing the creation of a pumping system and I figured that might work.

You can craft pumps with iron and wire, and the liquids are transferred from the inlet pump to the outlet pump through wire.

If you make the outlet and inlet pumps at an anvil with some iron or lead, you can connect them together by wire to transfer the liquids.
for wire you can buy wire cutters and harvest some wire from traps in your world or buy some at the mechanic npc. You will need some other tools to get this done including
1 of the wrenches she sells or the upgrades to it(last one item is the grand design and its very handy for all things wire)
a timer which you can buy from the mechanic(you can also make more basic timers from chain and a watch at a table and chair in a npc house.
