Enemy spawnrates in Terraria are way too high
So, I'm making a platform for the WoF and because I only have the Slime Staff, I have to deal with most of the enemies. I would be fine with this, but getting attacked by Hellbats or Demons every 3rd second is frustrating. If I got a copper coin for every time an enemy almost pushed me into lava, I'd have more platinum than the King Slime has health. (Health is not a lot but that in platinum is a crapton. Is there any way besides the calming potion to reduce spawnrates? I'm playing a WarriorMage (Melee and Magic) so I can't have minions fight for me except for the slime, because I still need something to slow the enemies down or possibly kill them.

Peace Candles and Sunflowers. Just put a few sunflowers underneath your arena (they have to be in dirt). Peace candles can be placed on platforms and tables but platforms are less likely to get destroyed by the Lava Slimes.

Sunflowers also increase movement speed. Also, Imp Staffs are really easy to make, they're better than the Slime Staff and can get the job done if you combine them with a Bewitching Table, allows you to have 2 Imp's active at once.

NPC houses will reduce enemy spawnrate. You can also craft peace candles, which I believe are crafted with pink torches (Made from pink gel) and 2 gold/platinum bars (This information may be false as I found out the recipe in a mass modded terraria world). Peace candles reduce enemy spawnrate.

IDK if you can put sunflowers in hell, but these reduce enemy spawnrate and increase movement speed. I recommend getting the cobalt shield from the dungeon, as it basically protects you from knockback, which is extremly useful, especially when trying to build a WoF arena.

In terms of fighting, I'm pretty sure there are multiple items that prodive great knockback to push your enemies. Look up the terraria wiki to learn more about them.

Lastly, in the worst scenario, you could use the "Cheat Sheet" mod, which allows you to change the monster spawnrate by a lot.

@Yokidz Yes, you can place Sunflowers in Hell, however you must place them on grassy dirt. Thus, you will likely need a Staff of Regrowth or some Grass Seeds from the Dryad as well.

The Underworld is notorious for having lots of enemies. Think of it as a test. If you can't even survive the denizens of the nether realm, what hope do you have against the horrors of a Hardmode World?
It may be a good opportunity to train yourself on how enemies react. Understand how different enemy types move, and counter them. Listen to your surroundings: The bone worms, bats, and demons can all be heard even before they are on-screen, enabling you to switch to a more proper fighting stance.

For the way you're playing, I would recommend focusing on your Magic abilities, and mostly relying on Melee as a backup, for when enemies are too close or you are out of mana. Get a waterbolt and either a Night's Edge or a Flamarang/Sunfury. Waterbolt is, in my opinion, one of the best weapons you can possibly obtain at this point in the game.
Waterbolt has great knockback, bounces, and pierces, so it is great for defence and offence. Sunfury and the Flamarang are great for knocking away enemies, to switch to your magic weapon, and the Night's Edge is raw power incarnate.

Make sure you have good modifiers on your gear, by going to the Goblin Tinkerer.

Otherwise... You may just have to, and I'm sorry, "git gud".
Good luck!
You think the spawn rates are bad now? Kill the WoF and enter Hardmode. It's only gonna get worse from there.

First things first, get the cobalt shield and upgrade it with obsidian, no knockback and some add def is not only helpfull, but crucial for melees.
Get some dirt and sunflowers, then use some of your hellstone to get the imp staff, it's a lot better than slime staff.
EDIT: What those guys above said is true, there's much more annoying enemies on hardmode, with more events and stuff so you should prepare a lot before even trying to kill WoF.

You could get some grav pots and use those instead of an arena for wof.

@Ninjathis I can survive, it's just that it's frustrating to have to deal with em. I know how the enemies move, they both have similiar ai. I just want to build uninterrupted. And I use melee as a backup already.
