if he didnt move inside a house you can't see him. At all. any npcs only appear when they have a housing to move in, you probably placed a torch inside a living wood tree chest house and hes currenty living there.

You need a valid NPC house. Refer to this page for more information:
https://terraria.gamepedia.com/House

If there is a valid NPC house available and unoccupied, an NPC would move in when night starts. If necessary, quit and reload your game, or move left or right until the NPC is out of your screen.

that isnt his issue, his issue is that the merchant moved into a housing he can't see and thinks that the merchant is there but doesnt want to move in.

i looked at the wiki and the housing is valid. its well lit and it has a table and chair. he can get to it but he keeps going back outside and the back in and back outside etc. i can take a screenshot if you want

also it is night but he still wont come in
HES ALREADY MOVED INTO ANOTHER HOUSING, a merchant CANT BE in your world unless he is in A HOUSING, find the other HOUSING and DEMOLISH IT.

Here is how I would force an NPC to move into a specific valid house:
  1. Press the Esc key.
  2. Click on the Housing icon.
  3. Click the icon for the particular NPC so that the NPC's icon is next to my mouse cursor.
  4. Click on the valid housing I want the NPC to move into.
Most of the time, if you have multiple valid houses, NPCs would randomly choose which house to move into.

try opening the housing menu in your inventory and assign him to the room you want him to be in
