am I bad at the game or is he ridiculously hard for pre-hardmode

possibly just bad- maybe the game is hard but i havent gotten many issues pre-hardmode so :v guess just focus on one goal at a time
presuming you mean slime king w/ this one, you should try get a blizzard, snow, sandstrom, hecking fart in a jar even (if you havent gotten any of these yet) that should help greatly uwu/ just focus on dodging, and getting off as many hits as possible, do anything BUT get stuck under the thing cos it does so much dmg then, a few plantforms here and there can help with the whole mobility thing as well

I have beat expert but its placement in the game doesnt feel right to me

I fought him in ocean with aquatic mobility gear.

Cheesy way involves railroad across the world, slime god does not despawn when you're running away and can't hit mincart at full speed.

I beat him with bee bow (bee's kneev?) and molten armor.
If you use Weaponout mod,you can use demon hand as well.

Majority of the calamity bossess require decent dodging skills and movement. Slime god is ranked below wall of flesh in the boss list. So you should have access to nearly all pre hardmode stuff.
(While melee weapons are impressively stronger, i suggest using range/magic,)

If you still need advice:
the most important thing is ARENA
without a good arena you gonna have a bad time
I had some real trouble with those guys when playing on normal mode but with a good arena I beat his little ass with even less afford on death mode.

Armor: Molten armor
Weapon: Molten fury (this is exactly a pretty terrible weapon, but it worked :P)
Accessories: Frostpark boots, counter scarf (shield of ctuhlu if not on revengeance mode), laudanum (Fungal clump if not revengeance mode), stress pills (Spirit glyph if not on revengeance mode) and skyline wings (all reforged to warding)
Potions: Just about all of them

ARENA:
30 rows of 2000 platforms with 4 blocks space between them.
Just looking at this probably makes you think "HOW THE HELL DID HE BUILD ALL OF THIS!!!"
I can tell you I didn't, I simply used Tedit to create the arena.
If you don't want to cheat but don't makes such an outrageously large arena you can also makes it 10 rows of 300 platforms.

Strategy:
Because of all the platforms pretty close together the slime's climb upwards pretty fast and that's what you are gonna utilise. Just simply shoot straight upwards with your bow (you don't have to focus the slime's try to get on the same X-as and the arrows will fall down right on the slime's if you missed them). You will also have an annoying little slime core around you which can be easily dodged by ascending or descending 2 platforms and dashing towards the side the core is coming from. With the molten fury it took me a pretty long time to kill them but because they almost never hit you doesn't matter that much.

If you play normal mode you can't have a dashing accessory so instead of that you can you something like the transformer or amidias' spark, I don't think it really matters that mush.

It's bellow the WoF because you can't really make an superB arena for the WoF but you can for the Slime gods. You will really feel it on revengeance and death mode.
