How do I recognize the explosive chest?

If you have a dart trap or pressure plate in your inventory you can put it in your hotbar and have it selected to see the wiring that is connected to the chest. It functions in the same way a pressure plate does so if it isn't wired to anything then it can't trigger anything.

In the future it is always a good idea to have a spare Wire Cutter from the Mechanic NPC in your inventory so that you can see the wires and then cut them as you come across them.
