How To Transfer Terraria Data
So I got a new PC, and want to transfer my world and character from my laptop to my PC. Normally, This would be easy, as 1.3 gave us the option to save to cloud. However, I often get corrupted files when I switch anything to cloud save. I need help backing up files before moving to cloud. Now I would do this, but I'm pretty stupid when it comes to computers. I've seen guides online, but a lot of them are just confusing for me,

Local game data is stored in:
/Documents/My Games/Terraria

You only need to copy this folder from your laptop and paste it in the same directory on your PC.

No, That would require a cloud save, which would corrupt my files

So like save it into a USB drive?

Yep, that can work.

Something like Google Drive would work as well.

This really is a nice feature of Terraria that it is so easy to backup your world and player files in a simple copy and paste operation within Windows. I just right click on the Terraria folder within my documents \my games folder and click send to zip file, then add a date for archiving purposes. I've been backing up pretty much since I started playing in 2014. It means of course you can easily transfer to another machine (just make sure you're using the same version number) and allows you to revert to a previous time if your game experience goes awry. For example if you defeated the wall of flesh and then decided that you were not quite ready for hard mode, you can just revert to a previous backup and carry on from there. Simple as copy 》paste 》replace. Also, if you are that way inclined, you can use this process to duplicate items in your inventory / worlds. I recently copied my partners world / player files over from her dying Windows laptop to a new macbook via a usb flash drive. Though admittedly the mac does struggle a bit, playable but all the graphic settings are set to the lowest levels, with frame skipping on. Always back up your game files on a regular basis! You never know when you might need them.

Okay, I have a question. I'm not trying to move this to a different computer, I'm trying to move it to a different drive in order to free up space on my main drive that has to run all of my system files. If I move this folder to a different drive, is there a way I can get terraria/tmod to recognize it? I attempted just moving it to terraria's steam files and none of the data is recognized by terraria, and tmod refuses to launch.

Pretty sure they have to be in the same place as the .exe in order to be recognized, but don't quote me on that.

I don't believe it's possible to make the game attempt to read from any directory other than the default, unfortunately.
