Search all chests?
It’s easy to loose track of items in chests.

Is there a way to search all chests for an item, without looking for them manually?

If I need to find a specific item, I don’t like having to search chest by chest, just to overlook something I need..

just, name the chests so u knowwhats inside "bars,ores,souls,gems....ranged, melee, summ...."

And keep the important ones in the safe or itemframes

Well... there is a mod for that... but people now seem to hate mods, so yeah... better name those chests

If you want to know if you have a certain item already, press the "quick stack to nearby chests" button, and make sure you're close to all the chests (move and click if you have to). If it disappears from your inventory, you know you have another one, and you just have to find it.
Why Try? Jul 15, 2018 @ 1:05pm
Try being more organized next time.

So basicallyyyy, there isn’t a search option.

I’ve tried all these methods before and I don’t like them.

Giving each item a chest means I need a ton of chests, so storing items is time consuming and finding items is still hard!
Hold the item and trying to place it can help, but if it’s a rare item, and I’m trying to find out if I own One, that doesn’t work.

Basically I want to just search them all, and see what’s where.
If that’s not possible that’s how it is, but that’s silly.
“Being organized” isn’t helpful advice.

in Vanilla: Organize chests by name, taking care to sort things right the first time, and then auto stack as needed.

Modded: Use Wheres My Items

Well, there's nothing anyone can do. "Being organized" IS helpful advice, so you won't lose your crap. Once I get 5+ chests, I start organising things into Blocks, Mining, Materials, Armor/Weapons/Tools, and Potions. Once I get more, I get a bit more specific. If you organize, you won't lose anything again.

If you have 10+ chests of crap, it takes max 10 minutes to sort them out if you do it properly.

Sorting the items is challenging because the number of objects in the game is Huge.

Also the items I collect carry so much that storing so many items will take time.

Being able to search the chests quickly would make storing items and finding items Much more efficient.

I was hoping that’d be possible because it’d be easy to program and easy to use.

I don’t like taking conplicated, time consuming steps to solve an easy problem.

Well, apparently you don't like mods, and you don't want to organize, so there's nothing you can do. You didn't have to revive something that you rejected all the answers for already.

1. I don’t know how to mod the game.

2. My OP was asking if the ability existed. I thought it must because it’s such a common problem with an easy solution.

3. I didn’t like the suggestions because they suggest a work around. I regognize the value of these recommendations, but I don’t believe it justifies such a game mechanic not existing

Just get Magic Storage. If you have a lot of gems (diamonds, emeralds, ect) and some bars you can make some containers that can store a lot of items with a search bar too. :)

Not sure what to tell you then. Modding is dirt easy, one of the easiest games to mod that doesn't have direct workshop. The game has certain built in sorting and organizing capabilities, but you are after does not exist. However, there are ways to add it fairly easily without changing the rest of the game at all. There's really nothing else to say.

Now with the Labor of Love update (1.4.4), there is a visual indication of where items are going when quick-stacking.

If you have one of the items, try quick-stacking it and see where it goes. That'll tell you what chest to look in. (It won't work if the chest is full, though.)

[Sorry for the necro-post, but I thought this might be useful now that it's in vanilla]

Thanks for the info. I heard the quick stack was updated, but didn’t know the details.
