Portal gun?
Rod of Discord?
1) Teleporters can't be obtained until the Steampunker moves into your world. Furthermore, teleporters only work if you connect two of them with wires and have some means to trigger them (preferably a switch for each teleporter when setting up general-use teleporters, since buttons may cause you to trigger them twice).
2) The portal gun works exactly as you would expect if Portal was 2D, except that you can apply a teleporter to any horizontal/vertical surface large enough for them to be placed on. However, the only legitimate way to get this item is to defeat the final boss. There's also a mounted varient of the portal gun, but obviously it's not as portable.
3) The Rod of Discord drops from Chaos Elementals, but it can warp you to wherever your cursor is. However, you'll be affected by the "Chaos State" debuff after using it, and using it again while the debuff is applied will cause you to take damage. Subsequent use of the Rod of Discord while under the Chaos State debuff CAN kill you if you're not paying attention to your health.
Edit: There's also Teleportation Potions, but those warp you to a RANDOM location in the world. Obviously, there's the risk that this will end up sending you somewhere where you'll die quickly (not on damage blocks, dungeon prior to killing Skeletron, or the dungeon, but you get the idea). If you're lacking a little bit of variety in your adventure, though, feel free to take a drink and see where you end up.
Edit2: There's actually one more means of teleportation: the Wormhole Potion. However, this only works on multiplayer by clicking on another player's head, and only if you and the other person have joined the same team. Still, if you need to regroup with your allies during boss fight and don't have teleporters, it's a very good option to have.
