As far as I can tell, it still offers a Classic mode feeling but also allows you to have a kind of creative mode option where you can get infinite number of something to craft or decorate with.
So if you want a lot of copper walls or stone bricks, you can get all that without mining more copper or stone, after you have done a minimum amount of it.
And then as far as mining new blocks, just keep upgrading your pickaxe and going for the new blocks. That is pretty much the main way to do it if you're not running a modded server where you can get those items.
