Summoner is STILL trash
I had my hopes up that 1.4 would finally make this class viable. It hardly does, it still barely has any weapons and the new whips are just terrible rip off flails. And the few weapons it does have, most of their AIs are so bad its more entertaining to laugh at them desperately try and hit something than try and effectively play. The only way I can ever stand this class is in a mod like Calamity. Does anyone else share the same opinion?

Maybe I should have been more specific. Pre-Hardmode summon feels way less fleshed out and much weaker than the others

I like creating miniclasses.I love the summoner's concept but i needs more things in Pre-Hardmode

Summoner has access to Spider Armor, Spider Minions (Fire Imp Minions), Queen Spider Sentry, DD2 Sentries, Summoner Emblem, Bewitching Table buff, etc. 🤔🍹

Ah, I see... I misread this as Early-Hardmode. In Pre-Hardmode, I really feel like no class has any direct focus, but... there are some things I do know work well.

Bee Queen stuff is pretty great, Beenades are good, Hive Pack is good, BeesKnees Bow is amazing, maybe grab a Star Cannon.

With the Bee Queen stuff, armor & buffs, DD2 up to wave five is possible. That'll net you an Early-Game Sentry Summon.

Stinger Necklace (new item) is pretty good, of course, Vampire Frog is pretty good, Spiky Balls also help a lot.

I don't know, Summoner feels a LOT better in 1.4 to me. The five-plus Minion Weapons in Pre-Hardmode I know about are 🤔🍹:


1.) Slime Staff

2.) Finch Staff

3.) Vampire Frog

4.) Hornet Staff

5.) Ballista (level 1)

6.) Flameburst (level 1)

7.) Lightning Aura (level 1)

8.) Explosive Trap (level 1)

9.) Imp Staff

There are 36 summoner staffs. There are 8 Whips. "Barely any" is close to 0. Not 36+8.
Whips don't share anything with flails from mechanics perspective besides modifiers. They are affected differently by accessories and have a different damage type.
I could link a few videos of people shredding 1.4 bosses/invasions and mobs with summoner weapons, but you are free to look them up yourself. The AI is not perfect and needs a rework, but claimg that they barely hit anything is a shameless lie.
As said you probably didn't even attempt to play a Summoner properly, or else you'd see how good the class is, if used properly with a good combo of gear and weapons.

Please don't be one of those crybabies who don't give a single ♥♥♥♥ about anything remotely true so you have to cry about others being mean to you for saying you're wrong.

Summoner is a ranged class, except it's forced into melee with whips. It doesn't have range of prism or ranged weaponry. It has no buffs. Retarded summon AI. Pathetic survivability. Questionable Stardust set bonus - though, admittedly, way better than previous trash version.

Anything summoner can do - other class will do better and faster.

While I do agree that Pre-Hardmode classes don't have much focus. You can still chose to play just Range, Melee or Mage perfectly fine and run into little trouble unlike trying to play Pure Summon.

Serious question. Who exactly forces you into melee and who exactly forces you to use whips in the first place?

Another serious question. Before 1.4 with no whips noone complained that a summoner has to play melee. Now whips were introduced and everyone says whips must be used?

Before 1.4 Stardust summoner had horrendous problems with target priorities of summons. Retarded AI. Whips kinda solve that problem by focusing minions. But they are melee, and summoner sets are horribly unprepared for it. So it just traded one problem for the other.

Then there are sentries. Again, strictly post-Monnlord. One got nerfed, one was always trash, both got a hardcap. Guess one can try and play with Bartender sets around those?

44 total weapons is nothing compared to the 181 of Melee, 89 of Ranged, and 74 of Mage. There are only 11 summon weapons in Pre-Hardmode and it's progression is such a mess. Until Queen Bee (which is usually fought Post EoW/BoC) there are little choices and the weapons you do have are terrible (other than maybe Imp Staff which is still Post EoW/BoC).
