what do fairies do?

ive been seeing alot of them but you can't kill or catch them

They can lead you to "treasure", usually meaning a Chest or Life Crystal.

they lead you to chests, life crystals, or large pockets of ores, if you see ones on the surface, you can catch them and bring them into caves to guide you to treasure

depends on the fairy, if you see one that glows rainbow colors and you try to kill it the fairy boss shows up. She is a lot harder then the moon lord.

If the wiki or other things I've heard are true (and seeing a group of them hanging around one at one point). Don't break any of the random sideways logs you see on the surface, as apparently those "this way to loot" faries stop spawning if there aren't any left.

They also might spawn around those at night, and you can catch them if they're on the surface. Then you could keep them and release them underground later, or put them in a bottle as a decoration

First of all, its not a fairy its a butterfly. Second, once again BUTTERFLY NOT FAIRY

you can only catch them if you find them on the surface
