solar armor, best defense and damge boost for melee. There is also the valhala knight armor sold from the bartender but i dont know that much about it

best consistent DPS would probably be solar helmet+chest and valhalla legs from tavernkeep if I had to guess, you'd get 46% melee crit chance and 29% damage, as well as 82 armor. might depend on what weapon you're using too, I'm not really sure how effective melee speed is going to be for the zenith as I haven't obtained it yet

Beetle armors both exceed the Solar if you use a specific version of it.
Beetle is pretty rad overall. Not best per-se, but best stat-wise for either reducing or buffing damage.
Nebula armor is also sick damage-wise. With some accessories you can make yourself an actual glass-cannon.

Now honestly i'd take Solar armor over Beetle armor for that big crit chance boost alone.

Yea but keep in mind Nebula boosters can now only be triggered with magic weapons.

Solar Helmet + Chest with Valhalla Greaves will give you the most damge output for Melee.
Raw dmg and Crit is alot better for Zenith then Speed, Speed doesnt seem to do anything for Zenith

I am a melee/tank class in terraria and the solar armor is better than the beetle armor in 1.4. over all the solar armor set has 6 more defence than the beetle armor plus you get better buffs from the solar armor also

Maybe you inform yourself first?

Beetle armor with Scale Mail and full Beetle Might has over twice the offensive benefits of Solar Flare armor (+44% melee damage and +42% melee speed for Beetle compared to merely +22% melee damage and +15% melee speed for Solar Flare armor). In terms of defense, Solar Flare armor provides slightly more defense than Beetle armor with Beetle Shell, but provides 15% less damage reduction and has an activation cooldown of 5 seconds rather than 3. Solar Flare armor always reduces damage taken by 30%, whereas Beetle armor has a maximum damage reduction of 45%.

Those 6 armor are in NO WAY better than 15% more damage reduction.

That 15% extra damage reduction is only for the first hit. Then it's the same for the second hit and 15% less if for the third hit, unless you avoid taking any damage until the stacks refresh. And if you're avoiding damage long enough to recover those stacks, the defensive bonus is generally pointless.

Also, Solar Armor got life regneration in 1.4, so the overall defensive benefit could outperform Beetle with Shell in practice.

But overall, Solar Armor provides better defense that Beetle with Scale Mail and more damage than Beetle with Shell.

So is the Solar armor. It got changed.
Instead of 30% damage reduction whenever you have charges, you now have 12% damage reduction at all times, and 20% additional damage reduction while charges are active. If you get hit enough it gets reduced.
Sorry, but 3HP/s is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on Expert and especially master.
The Solar Flare is a JoaT, but if you want specializing on something, you go with Beetle.

At 0 stacks Solar Armor has better damage reduction (12% vs 0%), at 1 stack Solar Armor is still better (12% + 20% vs 15%), at 2 stacks they're roughly equivalent and at 3 stacks Beetle Armor with Shell edges out Solar Armor. For a single hit.
